The Colonial Secretary, Hongkong-
Hongkong, 1st July, 1901.
I have the honour to acknowledge
receipt of your letter No.15 of the ... ultimo.
From it I understand that the decision
conveyed by your letter No.150 of 17th May 1901, is
maintained and that no exemption from the payment of
rates and taxes will be granted to Military officers
after the end of the current year.
This presumably cancels your memo-
randum of 5th June 1901, in which you informed me that
His Excellency the Governor had, pending the settlement
of the question, approved of the usual exemption being
continued.
His Excellency the General Officer Commanding
is so fully impressed with the fact of the heavy and
increasing expense incurred by the Officers of this
Garrison
